What is a server?

A server is pretty much a very powerful computer than you can remotely connect to and control. These are located around the globe.

How to setup a server

‌Google‌ ‌Cloud‌ ‌Servers‌

‌1.‌ ‌Create‌ ‌a‌ ‌google‌ ‌account,‌ ‌most‌ ‌of‌ ‌you‌ ‌should‌ ‌already‌ ‌have‌ ‌one‌ ‌of‌ ‌those.‌

‌2.‌ ‌Go‌ ‌to‌ ‌cloud.google.com‌ ‌

‌3.‌ ‌Click‌ ‌"Console"‌ ‌on‌ ‌the‌ ‌top‌ ‌right.‌

‌4.‌ ‌Hover‌ ‌"Compute‌ ‌Engine"‌ ‌on‌ ‌the‌ ‌left‌ ‌and‌ ‌click‌ ‌VM-Instances.‌ ‌ ‌

5.‌ ‌Click‌ ‌create‌ ‌instance.‌

‌6.‌ ‌Select‌ ‌region/zone.‌ ‌For‌ ‌Virginia‌ ‌I‌ ‌recommend‌ ‌us-east4-a,‌ ‌and‌ ‌for‌ ‌ ‌chicago‌ ‌I‌ ‌recommend‌ ‌ ‌us-central1-a‌ ‌as‌ ‌well.‌ ‌ ‌

7.‌ ‌Select‌ ‌vCPUs‌ ‌and‌ ‌RAM,‌ ‌at‌ ‌this‌ ‌point‌ ‌you‌ ‌should‌ ‌click‌ ‌"upgrade"‌ ‌and‌ ‌then‌ ‌"customize"‌ ‌to‌ ‌utilize‌ ‌insane‌ ‌specs‌ ‌for‌ ‌your‌ ‌server,‌ ‌as‌ ‌a‌ ‌reminder‌ ‌you‌ ‌have‌ ‌$300‌ ‌free‌ ‌credit‌ ‌and‌ ‌will‌ ‌be‌ ‌warned‌ ‌before‌ ‌you‌ ‌start‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌billed,‌ ‌so‌ ‌an‌ ‌insane‌ ‌server‌ ‌will‌ ‌technically‌ ‌be‌ ‌free.‌ ‌I‌ ‌recommend‌ ‌using‌ ‌24‌ ‌vcpu‌ ‌and‌ ‌156gb‌ ‌of‌ ‌ram.‌ ‌It's‌ ‌free,‌ ‌so‌ ‌why‌ ‌not?

‌8.‌ ‌Select‌ ‌the‌ ‌boot‌ ‌disk,‌ ‌I‌ ‌recommend‌ ‌SQL‌ ‌Server‌ ‌2012‌ ‌Standard‌ ‌on‌ ‌Windows‌ ‌Server‌ ‌2012‌ ‌R2‌ ‌Datacenter‌ ‌as‌ ‌well‌ ‌as‌ ‌selecting‌ ‌50gb‌ ‌SSD‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

‌9.‌ ‌Click‌ ‌"Allow‌ ‌HTTP‌ ‌traffic"‌ ‌and‌ ‌"Allow‌ ‌HTTPS‌ ‌traffic"‌ ‌and‌ ‌click‌ ‌create.‌ ‌ ‌

10.‌ ‌Once‌ ‌your‌ ‌server‌ ‌is‌ ‌booted,‌ ‌click‌ ‌the‌ ‌drop‌ ‌down‌ ‌arrow‌ ‌next‌ ‌to‌ ‌"RDP"‌ ‌set‌ ‌the‌ ‌password,‌ ‌copy‌ ‌it,‌ ‌download‌ ‌the‌ ‌RDP‌ ‌file‌ ‌and‌ ‌paste‌ ‌the‌ ‌password‌ ‌in‌ ‌and‌ ‌you're‌ ‌connected!‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌
